Project 1a – thinking about the project
“Your route should be documented based on the rhythm that presents itself as you move through the space. “ What is rhythm? Bits from the dictionary – movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like; a patterned repetition of a motif, formal element, etc., at regular or irregular intervals in the same or a modified form; the effect produced in a play, film, novel, etc., by the combination or arrangement of formal elements, as length of scenes, speech and description, timing, or recurrent themes, to create movement, tension, and emotional value in the development of the plot; pattern or flow; a sense of temporal development
How can you document rhythm with 2 dimentional pictures? Perhaps it can be the flow of the eye from one form to the next. Driving down a street, I see much less than I do walking… see different things as I relate them to me. So to create a representation with photos perhaps I look to create the experience of one or both. What I see is determined not only by my mode of transport, but also by my age, my gender, my experiences past, my assignment. Can feeling truly be represented by a photo? Perhaps. North Street, Baton Rouge. It possesses quite a range of elements. There are warehouses, churches, homes, businesses, cemetaries, parks, schools, run-down and broken pieces, rehabbed and polished areas. Every block seems to have a juxtaposition of elements – death and life, seediness and purity, tangled messes and formal lines. I find that so many of the “pretty” pictures could not be formed without the “ugly”.

I believe your project has a strong narrative, your idea of exploring dichotomies along the route is a great organizing element. It is important to try to find these dichotomies at multiple scales. While the texture changes across I-110 it is possible to find a stronger relationship along the entire route, even in an area that appears visually different. Try not to get stuck on aesthetic and look beyond for these relationships.
